Kappa Scholarships BACKGROUND

PURPOSE

The Kappa Scholarships have been established by the Missouri City-Sugar Land Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. to recognize outstanding high school seniors pursuing college and trade school studies. The program provides scholarships to outstanding students to assist with their first-year college or trade school expenses.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

To be eligible for a Kappa Scholarship, a student must meet the following requirements: • The applicant must have satisfied, or be in the process of satisfying, all requirements for the awarding of a high school diploma from an accredited High School by the close of the 2023 academic school year. • The applicant shall possess a cumulative grade point average of 2.50 or higher on a 4.0 scale. • The applicant must have demonstrated academic excellence as well as outstanding community service through activities, volunteerism and work experiences. • The applicant must be a citizen of the United States. • The applicant must have applied and gained acceptance to an accredited two or four-year college or university for the fall term of 2023. • The applicant must submit a written application and agree to a personal interview during the week of May 15-19, 2023, via Zoom (details will follow).

SELECTION CRITERIA

Applicants will be evaluated on the strength of their academic performance, leadership and participation in school and community activities, work experience, educational aspirations and on the strength of their personal statement.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

Completed applications postmarked no later than May 12, 2023, will be reviewed in accordance with the program criteria by a selection process determined by the Kappa Scholarship Committee. Scholarship awardees will be notified email and in writing. Decisions are final and binding. Questions may be directed to the Kappa Scholarship Committee at mocitynupesscholarship@yahoo.com. APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

• Read the application carefully and complete all sections.
• Include a typed personal statement of 250-300 words expressing how your high school experiences – academics, extracurricular activities, outside activities and work experiences – have prepared you for college, or trade school and why you should be considered for scholarship support and any other information you wish to share that may be of importance to the selection committee in their review of your application .

• Include two letters of recommendation:
       1. One letter from a school administrator on official school letterhead focusing on the integrity and character of the applicant
       2. One letter from a high school teacher or instructor focusing on the academic strengths and potential of the applicant


• Include – or request to have sent – an official high school transcript.
• Sign the last page of the application.
• Mail completed application to: Kappa Scholarships, Post Office Box 405, Fresno, Texas 77545.

EVALUATION PROCEDURE


All completed applications will be reviewed and evaluated by a committee of judges selected by the Senior Kappa Committee Chairman. Incomplete and non-qualifying applications will not be considered. Each application is scored based on academic achievement, high school leadership, activities, awards, community involvement and financial need.

NOTIFICATION OF RECIPIENTS


Final approval and notification of each scholarship recipient will be made by the Chapter’s Senior Kappa Committee Chairman in May 2023. Notifications will be made via email and a formal letter.
